Help & FAQs Koizuma™ | At-Home IPL Hair Removal Device
What You Need to Know
Tell me, what is IPL?
IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light. IPL Hair Removal is designed to help break the cycle of hair growth by targeting the hair root or follicle. Light energy is transferred through the skin’s surface and is absorbed by the melanin present in the hair shaft. The absorbed light energy is converted to heat energy, which disables the hair follicle preventing further growth. Treated hairs naturally fall out over the course of a few days to 1-2 weeks.
Is it permanent?
Yes, it is permanent!
IPL will continue to prevent regrowth as long as you keep treating regularly. With our product, you can expect to use the device every 4-8 weeks after your initial 12 treatments. As for ALL home-use IPL or laser treatments (don’t believe anyone who would tell you otherwise), one treatment won’t last forever and it’s crucial that you stay on top of top-ups.
Is it safe?
Absolutely.
There have been numerous clinical studies conducted that demonstrate the safety and effectiveness of IPL for hair removal.
How to use?
It is very important to shave any visible hair before use.
Ensure your skin is completely clean and dry (don’t use any gels or creams with your handset).
1) Plug the handset in and turn it on.
2) Press the button to switch through the intensity levels.
3) Make sure your intensity level is set to 1 if it is your first session.
For the best results, you should use your handset on the highest possible intensity level that isn’t painful. We recommend gradually increasing the intensity level after each session if the experience was not painful.
4) To use, ensure that the light window is completely flat against the skin. The light will begin to blink once you’ve placed the light window onto your skin. This indicates that the handset is ready to be used.
The handset has a sensor and will not flash unless the light window is in direct contact with your skin. If it is not in direct contact with your skin, the handset will not flash.
5) Click the Pulse button. Continue this over multiple areas until finished. Lift the head slightly after each pulse to avoid overheating.
For stubborn areas, we recommend that you treat the area up to 2 times per week and to try a higher intensity.
6) Press and hold the button to turn it off. Always disconnect the device from the electricity supply when finished.
7) Moisturise after you've finished.
Does IPL work on all skin tones?
IPL is suitable for all but the darkest skin tones. This is because the light energy may be more attracted to the pigments in the skin rather than the melanin in the hair. And since people of colour have a lot of melanin, treating their skin would be risky as they’d be more prone to burns and permanent damage from using IPL. In addition blonde, red and grey hairs can be difficult for IPL to treat due to the hairs’ lack of melanin.
Does IPL work on all hair tones?
IPL relies on the melanin in the hair absorbing the light energy, and therefore IPL is not effective on very light blonde, red, or grey-colored hair.
Do I need to shave before IPL?
We recommend that you shave the desired areas between treatments and before using your handset. Shaving takes the hair down to the appropriate length not to cause any burns during treatment but also allows the hair root to get targeted effectively.
What happens if you do IPL treatment without shaving?
Other forms of hair removal including waxing and tweezing will remove the hair root entirely. Which won't allow the IPL to target the root. That being said if you run your hand over the area and cannot feel any hair at all, then there is no need to shave. In regards to peach fuzz on the face, we recommend derma planning to remove those hairs prior to treatment.
Our IPL handset works by emitting a wavelength that targets the pigment in the hair. As the light is absorbed by the pigment in the hair it turns to heat which then kills the hair growth cells. Hair will grow back more sparsely and slower after each treatment, reducing hair growth permanently over time.
Does IPL hurt more than waxing?
One of the biggest advantages of IPL is that it is far less painful than alternative methods of hair removal. Most customers explain the feeling as a warm sensation on the skin.
What should I expect after my first IPL session?
We recommend that you shave the desired areas between treatments and before using your handset. Shaving takes the hair down to the appropriate length not to cause any burns during treatment but also allows the hair root to get targeted effectively.
Expect a slight burning smell when using the device. As the light energy is heating the hair, you may smell a slight burning smell; However, this just means there may be some hairs that have not been shaved. Please ensure that you have prepped the skin correctly and that the skin is completely shaved before starting your session.
How many sessions of IPL hair removal do you need?
We recommend using your handset once a week for the first 12 weeks. You can also use it twice per week for faster results. After this period, use the handset once a month for 3 months or until satisfied. To maintain hairless smooth skin after that, you may need to use the handset once every 2 to 3 months or as needed.
It is not necessary to treat the area more than once a week. This is because IPL is most effective in the hair growth phase, and some hairs may be dormant during treatment. This is why it is recommended to do 12 consecutive weeks of treatment.
Why is my hair still growing after IPL?
Try a higher intensity and use your handset 2 times per week (never more). Do this until you see some results, then you can reduce your frequency back to once per week.
Can I use IPL whilst pregnant or breastfeeding?
Although there is no evidence showing that IPL has negative effects on pregnant or breastfeeding women, we still don’t recommend using our handset as a precaution.
I have epilepsy. Is IPL suitable for me?
IPL will not be suitable for you if you have epilepsy.
I have PCOS. Is IPL suitable for me?
IPL can definitely be used on hormonal hair growth and has proven to be quite effective. Most PCOS customers have said this makes hormonal hair regrowth more manageable as it doesn’t regrow as quickly. It also assists with minimizing the appearance of shaver rash as you will not need to shave it as often.
Any Side-effects?
When using the handset as recommended, side effects are rare. Redness and swelling are the most common side effect of IPL, which will quickly subside after treatment.
Does IPL work on facial hair?
Yes, it does!
However, if you plan to use the IPL device on your face, we recommend only using the device below the cheekbones to avoid the eyes.
Which other areas of my body can I use IPL?
You can use your handset on any part of your body, including your Brazilian (Bikini area) and face. But please do not use around the eyes (use only below cheekbones).
Our IPL is not suitable for the ‘inner parts’ of the bikini area, therefore you should never use it on the labia minora, vagina, scrotum, or anus.
To prevent discomfort, we advise you to treat the bikini area, inner thighs, and buttocks with a lower setting, as this skin can be more sensitive.
Can I use IPL over freckles or moles?
It is not recommended to use IPL over very dark freckles or moles, however light freckles are fine.
Can I use IPL over tattoos?
You should not IPL over tattoos. The light energy will be more attracted to the pigments in the skin, rather than the melanin in the hair which can cause a reaction in the skin and blistering. You should always go around your tattoos.
Can I use this product before or after tanning?
If you have recently been sun tanning, we recommend waiting 2 weeks before using your handset. You should wait 48 hours to tan after using your handset. The same applies to sun beds. We advise removing all artificial tan before using our handsets, as the light energy may be more attracted to the pigments in the skin, rather than the melanin in the hair. You can reapply the tan after your session once the skin has relaxed.
Can I share my handset with anyone else?
Yes, you can. This may decrease the lifetime of the handset per user. You should also always thoroughly clean the handset after each use.
Do I need to wear eye protection?
Eye protection is advised; better to be safer than sorry.
How do I clean my device?
Cleaning of the handset is advised after each use.
You can use an alcohol wipe, or any antibacterial product to clean down the handset and the light window after treatment. Ensure your handset is powered off, and not plugged in before doing so. You should then store the handset in a cool, dry place after use (once the handset is completely dry).
Is this suitable for men?
Definitely! Our handsets are suitable for both men and women.
